Yet another dreadful weather day on a Saturday, greets a brave Rovers team who must have realised they may have to spent a night in Alderney when they set off. The home team capitulated on the same day England’s cricket team did in the first test of the Ashes, in driving rain with most spectators in vehicles or in the clubhouse. Rovers started on the front foot and were the first team to force a save from a goalkeeper (Laband) with the home team countering without creating a great deal. Although McCarthy making his home debut did look lively and tried his best to create chances. The signs of an early goal were there when a short pass back from captain Adamson put Laband in a tricky spot but he saved well. Taylor did have a half chance but his shot was just wide, then on 20mins Rovers number 10 rounded Laband and finished well 0-1, another short back pass nearly made it 0-2. The homes sides best spell of the game Dante’s free kick a whipped ball across the box found Parry whose effort went over, Lawrence then had a shot from outside the box again over the bar. At the other end, Rovers first corner and a mix up between Maloy and Laband see’s Rovers make it 0-2, a Dante shot joins the other ball in the bramble wilderness on the way to Saye beach. On the stroke of half time, it really should have been three, a short goal kick went to a Rovers forward who should have scored.
Half Time Alderney 0-2 Rovers res
Half time sub, Jack Ives on for Liam, as a few hardy soles emerged from the clubhouse Rovers made it three 0-3, a free kick to the Nomads did fall to Adamson his shot missed the target unfortunately, a good chance to get back on the score sheet. Owen on for McCarthy who did have a good game and looked lively at times, most of the 2nd balls were appearing to be won by the away side who were coping with the conditions better. Rovers’ keeper still hadn’t had to make a save, then a penalty was awarded for a foul just inside the box by Poullain converted easily 0-4 and the dreary afternoon gets worse. A few chances did arrive for Alderney as they sought for a consolation, a cracking Dante cross falls to Carre who had a free header but missed the target, Dante then had a great chance, he neatly turned a couple of defenders but once composed his shot was pulled wide. That probably summed up the game, a disappointing result for the Nomads last home game of the year. The few positives Ives played well when he came on and it was s decent debut by McCarthy.
