Our Club

Our History

Alderney Football Club has a rich and storied history, rooted in the island’s community. Football has been played on Alderney since Victorian times, with matches between local teams and garrisoned British troops becoming a common sight. The club itself was formally established to bring structure and competitiveness to football on the island, allowing Alderney to compete in regional leagues and tournaments.

One of the most notable milestones in the club’s history was its participation in the historic Muratti Vase competition, where Alderney secured its only win in 1920. Over the years, the club has continued to evolve, adapting to challenges and embracing opportunities to ensure football remains a vital part of Alderney life.

How the Club is Set Up Today

Today, Alderney Football Club is a cornerstone of the island’s sports scene. The club operates under a structured framework, with dedicated individuals working together to manage its various facets:

  • The First Team: Competes in Guernsey football leagues, representing Alderney in highly competitive matches against teams from Guernsey.
  • Youth Football: A growing youth program that provides training and match opportunities for the next generation of footballers on the island.
  • Club Officials: Managed by a passionate team of volunteers, including a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Team Manager, and Welfare Officer, who ensure the smooth running of the club.
  • Supporters and Members: Supported by a loyal fanbase and Life and Annual Members who contribute both financially and with enthusiasm.

Representing Alderney on Regional and International Stages

  • Muratti Vase Participation:
The Muratti Vase is an annual football competition featuring teams from the Channel Islands: Alderney, Guernsey, and Jersey. Alderney’s First Team competes in this historic tournament, showcasing their talent and determination. The club’s proudest Muratti moment came in 1920 when they secured their only championship win.
  • Island Games Involvement:
Alderney Football Club’s First Team also represents the island in the football tournament of the Island Games, a biennial multi-sport event that includes international island teams. Competing in the Island Games provides players with a chance to play on a larger stage and gain valuable experience. A memorable highlight was Alderney’s 3–0 victory over the Falkland Islands in the 2017 Island Games held in Gotland.

Through these competitions, Alderney Football Club is able to compete at higher levels, proudly representing the island’s footballing spirit.
