The Baker Cup

The Baker Cup, introduced in 1978, is a significant yet often overlooked part of Alderney’s football history. It was the brainchild of Mr. Baker, owner of Bakers Bazaar in the Pollet, Guernsey, who married an Alderney woman and generously donated a trophy while establishing a fund to cover the Guernsey Rangers’ annual travel expenses to compete in Alderney. This initiative not only brought a high standard of competition to the island but also created a much-anticipated yearly fixture that became a highlight for local supporters.

In its early years, Guernsey Rangers dominated the Baker Cup, regularly claiming victory. However, in 1989, Alderney’s football team secured a historic win, marking a proud moment for the island. More recently, the Nomads have enjoyed success in the competition, winning the trophy in 2018 with a 1-0 victory, in 2022 with an impressive 8-0 win, and in 2024 with a 3-1 triumph.

Despite its importance, the Baker Cup’s run came to an end in 1991 when the funds established by Mr. Baker were exhausted. The trophy was retained by Guernsey Rangers, and for over 27 years, the Baker Cup was absent from Alderney’s footballing calendar. However, in September 2018, the cup was revived and restored to its rightful place in the island’s sporting tradition. The first Baker Cup match in nearly three decades saw Alderney Nomads host Guernsey Rangers at the Arsenal Ground for their inaugural home fixture of the Priaulx League season, with sponsorship from the Campania Inn. This revival rekindled the excitement and significance of the competition, offering both players and fans the chance to engage with an important piece of Alderney’s football legacy.

The Baker Cup may not always receive the recognition it deserves, but with each match, this competition continues to honour its origins and add to the island’s sporting heritage.
